An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale has struck Taiwan's coastal city of Hualien, shaking buildings in the capital Taipei.
The quake struck at 0501 GMT at a depth of 19 km in eastern Hualien.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
