Akhtar says DP World ILT20's crucial to growth of cricket in UAE

Former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar has highlighted how tournaments like DP World ILT20 have contributed immensely to prompting "franchise cricket" in the UAE.

He expressed delight at watching cricket grow in popularity, and identified "leagues like DP World ILT20 (to) help the game". 

"A lot of cricket has happened here in the last four decades. Homegrown cricket is what was missing but with the addition of DP World ILT20, they will start producing more talent," Akhtar said, adding, "The crowd is always passionate here, and the tournament is going great. We can see it is getting bigger and better every year. I am glad to play my part as an ambassador."

The cricketing legend said it's crucial to see how "youngsters have been given a platform" to showcase their talent.

"We saw Muhammad Waseem from UAE hammering world-class bowlers. This is the contribution that DP World ILT20 has provided. New talent is coming forward for the UAE team, and in a few years’ time, you can see them on the world map," Akhtar added. 

He also reunites with former Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag for the tournament. "When we get a chance to meet each other, it’s fun. We’ve played for many years together, so we talk about our shared experiences and memories. We’re thankful for DP World ILT20 to give us this opportunity."

DP World ILT20, which began on January 19, has witnessed some exhilarating contests with defending champions Gulf Giants, Mumbai Indians Emirates, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and Dubai Capitals registering a win each in their respective matches.
