Snow sports lovers descended on Ski Dubai for one of the first snow sports competitions in the world to be held with social distancing measures.

The Dubai Sports Council, in cooperation with Ski Dubai, held the two-day ‘DXB Snow Week’ on August 14-15, billed as the “Return to Safe Sport”

The novel ‘DXB Snow Run’ was staged on Friday morning, where participants from more than 46 countries competed on 3km course through the snow, in temperatures below -4C.

Former British Royal Marine, Nick Watson, and his son Rio, a child of determination, competed together in the event for Team Angel Wolf.

Racers, freestyle skiers and snowboarders took part in ski and snowboard competitions on Saturday in four disciplines: Slalom Skiing, Giant Slalom, Slopestyle and Big Air with a panel of freestyle judges adjudicating at the event.

Ski Dubai implemented health and safety guidelines for the event including sanitisation regimes and a physical distancing plan.

No family and friends were allowed inside Ski Dubai to watch the event, and once participants cross the finish line, they were required to leave Ski Dubai and exit immediately from the venue.

The winter and snow sports sector is the third segment to be opened for competition by Dubai Sports Council following weeks of closure due to COVID-19 pandemic.
