Ten people were arrested and a police officer suffered a serious facial injury after crowd trouble at Manchester City’s 3-0 Premier League win at Liverpool on Sunday, Merseyside Police said on Monday.
The officer was hurt while arresting a man on Anfield Road after the match. He was treated in hospital and is now recovering at home.
Those arrested include a man suspected of assaulting a police officer, five people on suspicion of tragedy chanting, two for affray and one for throwing objects onto the pitch.
“It is extremely disappointing that an officer has sustained a serious injury while carrying out that duty,” Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin said.
The match took place amid heightened tension around Manchester City, after a Premier League ruling found the club guilty of 114 breaches of the league’s financial rules.
Liverpool fans booed City’s team announcement before kick-off and chanted “Going down, going down!”, a reference to the possibility that City could be relegated if sanctions are imposed.
City deny wrongdoing and have appealed the verdict.
