UAE Team Emirates-XRG's Wellens takes Tour of Britain lead

WAM

UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider Tim Wellens moved into the overall lead of the Tour of Britain after finishing second on Stage 4 on Saturday.

The Belgian broke away with 42.8 kilometres remaining on the route from Helmsley to Leyburn before finishing alongside Cees Bol of Decathlon CMA CGM, who took the stage victory.

Wellens gained enough time to overhaul previous race leader Lewis Askey and will take a 21-second advantage over the Briton into Sunday's final stage.

His UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammates had increased the pace earlier in the stage, with Mikkel Bjerg leading the peloton on the Greenhow Bank climb before Wellens made his move.

The Emirati team is seeking its first overall victory at the Tour of Britain.
