Dubai Humanitarian launches air bridge to deliver vital aid to Gaza

Dubai Humanitarian has facilitated a new air bridge to deliver urgently needed humanitarian supplies to Gaza.

This comes following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The operation supports the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) efforts to provide vital medical aid to people in Gaza.

The first flight departed from the Dubai Air Wing two days ago, carrying 11 tonnes of essential medicines aboard a C-130 aircraft bound for Al Arish International Airport in Egypt. The supplies will then be transported into Gaza.

Three more flights have since followed, carrying additional medicines, tents and fortified biscuits to help meet urgent nutritional needs.

Over the coming weeks, Dubai Humanitarian will facilitate the delivery of around 150  tonnes of WHO medical and health supplies to Gaza, with further flights planned.

The supplies come from stocks pre-positioned at the WHO Global Logistics Centre, hosted by Dubai Humanitarian, allowing aid to be moved quickly when it is most urgently needed.

Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani, Dubai Humanitarian's Chairman, said the latest air bridge builds on the organisation’s ongoing efforts to support humanitarian operations in Gaza and around the world.

He added that Dubai Humanitarian has also supported relief operations this year in Afghanistan, Mozambique, Lebanon and Uganda, while earlier facilitating the overland delivery of essential medical supplies to Gaza through a three-truck WHO convoy.

The WHO says the latest charter flights are delivering more than $1.3 million worth of medicines and medical supplies, enough to support around 400,000 people in Gaza.

Robert Blanchard, the WHO's Head of Emergency Operations, said the support from Dubai Humanitarian and the Government of Dubai is helping the organisation deliver more medicines, reach more patients and reduce logistics costs.
