Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a major contract to upgrade Umm Suqeim Street, Al Wasl Road, Al Safa Street and seven intersections along Jumeirah Street, as part of wider efforts to improve traffic flow and expand road capacity across some of the city’s busiest districts.

The project includes the construction of bridges and tunnels stretching around 11 kilometres in total, along with road widening works, improved pedestrian walkways, cycling tracks and new public spaces.

The RTA said the development is designed to support Dubai’s urban growth, improve mobility and reduce congestion across key residential and commercial areas including Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Safa and Al Wasl. The project is expected to serve communities with a combined population of more than two million people.

On Umm Suqeim Street, the upgrade will cover the stretch from Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road. Capacity will increase to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, while journey times are expected to fall from 20 minutes to just six. The project includes six upgraded intersections, four bridges and two tunnels.

Al Wasl Road will be widened from two lanes to three lanes in each direction along a 15-kilometre stretch between Umm Suqeim Street and 2nd December Street. Capacity will rise from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour, with journey times expected to be cut by half. Five new tunnels will also be built along the route.

On Al Safa Street, capacity will double from 6,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour, while journey times are expected to drop from 12 minutes to three. The works include two bridges, two tunnels, upgraded junctions and expanded cycling and pedestrian routes.

Seven intersections along Jumeirah Street will also be improved through at-grade upgrades designed to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer said the project forms part of a wider strategy to modernise Dubai’s transport infrastructure, improve connectivity and support long-term economic growth. He said smoother traffic flow and stronger transport links help improve productivity and reinforce Dubai’s position as a leading destination for business and investment.
