Insulting or defaming people online can lead to prison and fines of up to AED 500,000 under the UAE law, Dubai Police has warned.

Its "UAE Is Safe with Your Digital Awareness" campaign is reminding social media users to think carefully before posting comments that could hurt, ridicule or offend others.

The warning came in an awareness video released during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is marked every October.

The campaign was launched by the Ministry of Interior with Dubai Police and the Dubai Electronic Security Centre.

It refers to Article 43 of the UAE’s law on combating rumours and cybercrimes. Under that law, anyone who insults another person online, or accuses them of something that could expose them to punishment or contempt, faces prison, a fine of between AED 250,000 and AED 500,000, or both.

Penalties are tougher if the offence targets a public official or someone carrying out a public service, in connection with their duties.

The campaign is encouraging people to use social media for respectful debate rather than personal attacks or mockery.

It also aims to raise awareness of online fraud, cybercrime and the misuse of artificial intelligence.
