Powerful 8-magnitude earthquake hits Peru

A strong earthquake, measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale, has struck northern Peru.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake struck at a moderate depth of 114 km at 2:41 am (local time), 80 km southeast of the village of Lagunas.

The quake was felt in the city of Callao, and the capital, Lima, with power cuts reported in a number of Amazonian cities.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, and no tsunami alerts issued.
